Weird music

~detritus

A few times I've been told, about some or other music I was listening to, that it was 'weird'. That's an interesting compliment, one would say, a weird one :-)

It always puzzled me when somebody would say something like that. What makes music "weird"? Whenever someone has come and described some music as "weird", it immediately goes into my list of favorites. More weird music, more!

Sometimes I've felt the same thing, when listening to new music, it has come to my mind an understanding of what people may mean by that thought, as it comes to my mind: This music is weird! Even I don't know what it means, and I find myself somewhat amused to have this thought myself.

Just the other day I was listening to Kraftwerk. I have listened to them a thousand times before. The idea crossed my head as I imagined one of the people who occassionally come near my house. Workers usually bring their music, very standard music, the one that keeps playing on the radio, they rarely ever go beyond this. Kraftwerk would certainly seem weird to them!

I don't know if there is a lesson to be taken from this, just a thought I thought worth sharing. By the way, nobody seems to be using the jukebox, mind if I play some Kraftwerk?

~bartender more and more coffee, keep it coming!

I have been listening to a few other krautrock bands as well like Can [like couple of their albums though not all, their vocals something nauseate me] and Faust [which is really weird, sometimes in a positive way ].

Africa Bambaata LOVES Kraftwerk (Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock).

I tried BreakDancing in my Youth, and my Favourite Electro-Funk-Track is "Willesden Dodgers - Jive Rythm Trax 122 bpm".

Also check for the "Knightz of Bass" from Mannheim, Germany ... !

oh man, kraftwerk! they end up in rotation quite often sometimes when i throw my collection into 'shuffle' mode. *Computer World* and *Radioactivity* are probably two of my favorites from them.

music, like all art, is one of those highly subjective things, something that i love someone else may find 'weird' (like you, i'm not sure on the meaning of this when it comes to music, as it certainly will sound 'not weird' to someone else). for instance, i've had music going before and someone would tell me it isn't to their taste. i know i was playing Boards of Canada one time and an old friend of mine thought it sounded weird.

of course, like you, every time i hear someone say the word 'weird' or 'unique' or some other similar term when it comes to tunes, it ends up on my radar. i've always been a huge fan of experimental music, which a lot of people will surely deem 'weird', but i can't get enough of it! give me all the 'weird' tunes you can find! :-)

~bartender, that coffee certainly smells good. mind pouring me a mug? and i will happily throw a few quarters down for those kraftwerk tunes to play on the jukebox, as well.

Wow, the band's inception was back in the early 1970s, and somehow I never heard of it?

Must have been some Russian Interference(tm) at werk.... :-)
