-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Apparently my Gemini server had been down for... a long time. And I didn't even
realize it. It looks like the package I'm using just happily overwrites the
configuration file, and when I upgraded last it essentially just put the default
in its place. But I also hadn't updated anything here in years, so, I suppose
that's my own fault.
Anyway, I really should set some time aside to write on this thing. I don't know
if anyone really reads it, but it feels a little less chaotic writing to a
gemlog than it does writing to a blog on some major platform or high traffic
site.
I do think at this point I've decided to call it quits trying to maintain any
sort of fediverse presence aside from Lemmy. I've been playing around with
Bluesky over the last several months, and I have to say that I really prefer
the atmosphere there to anything on the fediverse. I try to follow interesting
and cool people on the fediverse, but I am so tired of the incessant drama,
bitching, and moaning. It never seems to end. It forever seems to be a land
without nuance, where everything is black and white, everything is absolute. I
guess there are a lot of people that like that, but I am not one of those
people, and I really think at this point I just don't belong there.
That said, I feel like in the long run Bluesky is more likely to succeed at
creating a successful, federated network with discoverability that a more
diverse group of people enjoy using. I've been running my own PDS (Personal Data
Server) for Bluesky for several months now, and I'm looking forward to the other
applications people build on top of ATproto. I hope it will succeed. I do think
sometimes that it sucks they didn't work with ActivityPub, but I also think
ActivityPub is just too different from what they were wanting to accomplish with
ATproto and it was easier to just start over, at least based on what I've read
from the developers.
Finally, I guess my main other project or new project for now is trying to learn
Rust and then hopefully writing some type of BBS software to eventually replace
Synchronet. I have no idea if or when that's going to happen, but I'm slowly
working on learning Rust and trying to get the basics down so I can actually
start on the BBS software.
Of course, I'm not saying Synchronet is bad. Synchronet is pretty damned amazing
for what all it can do, and the fact it's FOSS and has been in development for
decades. But there is a lot of stuff in it I just don't like, and some features
from other BBS software I used back in the day that I'd really like to see in a
newer project. So why not make my own? We'll see how that goes.
