I finally broke free of the analysis paralysis and got myself an XMPP account 🎉

XMPP and IRC are the way. I still use both daily. I wanted to like Matrix, but I just can’t. The fact that the specs grow so quickly and no client other than Element can seem to keep up is disheartening, plus Element (the company) don’t feel like particularly good actors. · 1 year ago
i found SDF first then went about signing up for its services, which included xmpp. I have the address over at my capsule. haven't used it much as none of my IRL folks use it, but have received a couple nice messages from people on the smol web. · 1 year ago
@mathpunk: 😁 Don’t be afraid to say hello! My JID is listed on my capsule at gemini://totroptof.capsule.town (but also don’t feel pressured if you don’t want to 🙂) · 1 year ago

@docedelgas: I was trying to choose between XMPP providers. I went with xmpp.is, but I was initially thinking of some sort of collective-type thing like disroot.org or sdf.org where I could get email, too. I was also thinking about tildes, which I might still try, but commitment is scary
There’s a bunch of other random XMPP providers around like yax.im and hotchilli and whatnot, and I just ended up choosing xmpp.is because they seemed extra privacy-friendly (although, that could also just mean they’re a honey pot :P) · 1 year ago

@tskaalgard: yeah… AFAIK OMEMO should support seamless syncing between devices and the issues are mainly up to rough implementations. I haven’t had issues on that front (one of the benefits of being a shut-in, I guess 😎) but I do remember conversational partners having lots of issues in the past. Maybe it’s better nowadays?
@lykso: xmpp.is. I was interested in their onion service but I wasn’t sure if people on most non-onion servers would be able to reply to me, so I just went with their non-onion one to short circuit the umming and ahhing :P · 1 year ago
