Smol web
Is an awful and ugly definition, can we stop using it? π

The web is called so because of it's interwined nature. So, rip off the links and no need to call it smol web :-) I like the name, but tinyverse is also nice. Just, it reminds me of FBs Metaverse. Β· 2 years ago
I donβt think Web is appropriate here. Web is short for the World Wide Web, right? Gemini nor Gopher are on the World Wide Web, so why are we still calling them the web? Β· 2 years ago
@smokey fair enough, but I won't use it... π Β· 2 years ago
When refering to gemini space specifically, "gemsphere" is what I use. However the human mind is usually creative enough to get what is meant even if theres some variation on the word. Just as long as gem is in there ;)
Smol web is more of a general blanket sweep term. Smaller internet projects and protocols such as gemini, gopher, finger and spartan are bound together under an ideology born from the desire to see a smaller and more homegrown internet like it used to be. I like the term "smol" and how its used :P besides, what else are magazine creators and artist going to name their work if they cant put in "smol" somewhere in the title? Madness! Β· 2 years ago
@gnuserland sadly i don't think that we could push against the cultural mass (we are in space after all) of doggolingo. how about we call this the True Web, make a flag, and come up with a casus belli just so we know that we are in the right:-) Β· 2 years ago
@digbat So I wasn't drank... π© We are tossing in the same basket too many things that aren't really related among them: Finger protocol is very old, Gopher is sligthly older than HTTP(WWW), Gemini is just a baby compared to the former ones.
The FTP protocol looks quite spartan, does it belong to the small or the BIG web? And Telnet?
Is it "smol" anything that can be done or interact with through a terminal or a console? Β· 2 years ago
@gnuserland, you were not alone, i had to go look it up lol - something small and cute according to urban dictionary - possilbly from tumblr speak WTFTI. Β· 2 years ago
@smokey not really, however we can call some places with their names, therefore everything that belongs to the Gemini protocol can be grouped as Gemini-Space.
I am not even really sure what "smol" means... Β· 2 years ago
Tinyverse has a cool ring to it. Or maybe "Web 0" if you want to emphasize the return to simplicity instead of the size. Β· 2 years ago
off the top of my head: "tinyverse" "The Smol" "nanonet" Β· 2 years ago
Do you have some other alternatives in mind? Β· 2 years ago
