Another way in which Google Chrome spies on users β€” It turns out Google Chrome (via Chromium) includes a default extension which makes extra services available to code running on the *.google.com domains - tweeted about today by Luca Casonato, but the code has been there in the public repo since October 2013 as far as I can tell.

someone leaked on GitHub supposedly sensitive Chinese government data - specifically related to offensive cyber security. β€” It seems someone or a group of people published on Github a series of document describing various offensive solution to spy and hack various devices, online accounts, extract data from the targets. Be aware that the documents are in Chinese and translating them will take some time from online privacy experts. [https link] The github repository [https link] In the news

The war on privacy continues, Binance delist the privacy crypto currency Monero β€” It’s not really a surprise but Binance, the bullshit casino that dump all kind of dubious pump ’n’ dump delisted Monero a privacy first crypto currency, that is built to provide strong privacy and protection to its users. With all the discussion to ban strong encryption or to backdoor it It feels increasingly similar to the crypto wars in the early 90 with PGP. There is a relenthless push and a blend of...

Encrypted Communication Illegal in Australia... β€” Not really news, but I came across an article from a year ago: Police arrested a 22-year-old with cash, drugs, and an encrypted communications device. Never mind the drugs; the state were particularly interested in charging the man with violating the Dedicated Encrypted Criminal Communication Device Prohibition Orders Act 2022. Communication using encryption that makes it hard for law enforcement to intercept the messages is illegal. I was very...

The cookie policy is bullshit, counterproductive and harms privacy! β€” Apologies if my post seems like a rant In this modern era, it's impossible to access a website without being bombarded by countless pop-ups requesting your permission to track, monitor, sell, and monetize your data and metadata. The one thing that occurred to me is that this is not only pointless but actually harmful. Before this absurd policy, you could simply delete your cookies once a week (or occasionally) and your...

Qwant search engine β€” I've been using Qwant.com as my main search engine -- I can't remember why, but I think I've read some good stuff about it back then. Today it started keeping me out unless I turn off the ad blocker. Looking at uBlock it appears that 21 hits are blocked; looking at the log reveals suspicious-looking tracker-like scripts. I don't like being pushed around like that, so I will probably stop using it. Do you know anything about this? What search engine do you use?

Email - Any suggestions for email? I've been transitioning away from my Gmail account to an address at my personal domain name. Right now I'm using privateemail.com for hosting. The cost is reasonable, but the spam filtering is not great.

Privacy rights of children β€” As a parent of young children I hear about parents with older kids equipping their kids with all this surveillance hardware so they can track their kids for their apparent safety. I am strongly against this but I know the old privacy vs safety argument, and when it's your own kids at that age "you'll do it too" I just feel like this is just prepping future generations to feel like they're constantly watched and then they're just okay with it as adults. it starts...

Simplex Chat β€” Is anybody else familiar with Simplex Chat? I just started checking it out a couple days ago and it seems like a neat little messenger. It reminds me of a kind of middle ground between Signal and Briar.
