Chocolate Review: Dagoba organic xocalatl

2008-10-17

The subtitle of this chocolate is "rich dark chocolate chilies and nibs." The chilies are the highlight here. I really like this bar, but Jena's not a fan.

The bar is semi-glossy with an imprint of what appears to be cocoa bean pods on it. It has a clean snap and is slightly crumbly. It melts in my fingers pretty readily. The low melting point makes it pretty smooth, though.

It's fairly sweet and the flavor has kind of a 'spice cabinet' taste to it. I think that's what turned Jena off, but I find it fairly pleasing. There is a noticable nutmeg flavor, and a nice hint of vanilla. It melts smoothly and has a nice deep flavor at first, but then the chili kicks in.

This bar packs a punch. It's not eye-watering, but you definitely get a satisfying burn. The chili flavor blends nicely with the cocoa, and while the nibs don't seem to affect the taste, they give a nice counter-texture to the smooth chocolate.

I haven't seen Spicy Maya bars in a few months, but this is definitely a worthy alternative.
