Chocolate Review: Ritter Sport - Milk chocolate with whole almonds

2008-09-22

As you might expect, I spend time browsing discussions on chocolate, and I've heard good things about Ritter Sport, a German chocolatier. I've been curious to try them, but to be honest, I have a hard time putting anything with 'sport' in the name close to my mouth.

After the Hershey's post this morning I had a severe chocolate attack and had to go to the store during lunch. One of the things I picked up was a Ritter Sport Milk Chocolate with Whole Almonds.

It's a very good milk chocolate. It's got the smooth European chocolate thing going for it (I hope you know what I mean). The chocolate is sharp and has a slight maple flavor to it. The almonds are delicious. Large, whole, and roasted. The almond to chocolate ratio is very good. There is a lot of nut in each bite, but there is plenty of chocolate. The whole almonds really add to the appeal of this bar. They add a great crunch and a strong flavor.

Sometimes you need some nuts in your chocolate. In that situation I usually go for a Hershey's with Almonds (still has cocoa butter in it), or Almond M&M's (Mars still puts cocoa butter in their chocolate, thank goodness!). Ritter Sport is a little expensive at about $3 for 3.5 oz, but the per ounce price is really not too bad, and the flavor makes it worth the extra cost.

Like chocolate and almonds? Get one of these bars. You won't regret it.
