Friday Foster

1975

4/5

There are other people who would do a better review of this as a blaxploitation movie, but as a fan of the comic strip, I have to say it's a brilliant adaptation. It was the first mainstream comic strip to feature an African-American woman as the main character. The strip is pure 70s, in writing and artwork, and this movie is no different. Sure, it does some things that a newspaper comic can't, with language and violence restrictions in newspaper strips being heavily enforced from their very early days, but that's what makes it so interesting. Most comic strip movies don't seem to want to do any more than the source material does. This movie not only does what the strip does, but takes it to its logical conclusion: What would the character look like, and really be doing, without the restrictions of the newspaper page? This is the answer, and it's brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
