1980
3.5/5
In short, this is not a good movie (I don't think even those who like it would say it is). It can be an enjoyable experience, though, for a few reasons:
- Phenomenal soundtrack from Queen
- Costume design that looks simultaneously awful and awesome
- Timothy Dalton doing what he does
- Brian Blessed being himself
- "Tell me more about this man Houdini" (which is really a better joke than this movie deserves)
At the same time, though, there's horrible cheesy dialogue, awful acting from the two leads, eye-rolling sexiness, and a Yellow Peril villain who, while impeccably acted, should have been out of style even in the 80's.
Still, as I said, it can be enjoyable to watch in parts, and I totally get why it has a cult following. Not sure I would ever watch it again, but I would recommend it to fans of enjoyably bad movies.
