RSS

// Authors note: Amended Android install footntoe

I was recently listening to the Cortex podcast on Relay.fm, a podcast hosted by the YouTuber CGP Grey and Podcast Professional Myke Hurley. On this they went into the apps they're using and ways they try and streamline and improve their lives.

The podcast episode as a whole (State of the Apps) rarely applies to me because of how integrated into the Apple/iOS ecosystem they are - but I have found some common cross-tech struggles and adapted their solutions.

One of which CGP Grey brought up was using "RSS" more. Which was a funny thought to me, in 2022, RSS is being phased out of the web more and more (except here, via atom :P).

But could I borrow some things from them?

How to RSS

I had been using RSS all along in Thunderbird, subscribed to LWN and a few blogs. But that's just Thunderbird... on my PC. That's not really useful to me in bed when I want to doom scroll and would rather do something productive.

So I setup Tiny Tiny RSS.

TT-RSS

I had not heard of Tiny Tiny RSS and by golly I don't feel this is TINY at all. I was expecting (from the name) a suckless.org style RSS feed downloader. But its actually a full blown PHP webapp.

What this offers me is what I was wanting though:

That's really it. And this came up first!

Their own docker!

Something nice I found is they had their own docker-compose.yml I could use which was lovely, since I dislike installing trial programs directly on my server. And if I did want to expose this outside my LAN then I could easily throw it behind my domain (which also runs via docker).

What am I subscribed to?

The biggest thing I am changing is subscribing to my YouTube subscriptions via RSS. This is a trial and I literally JUST set it up. But I do want to cut down on my YouTubing more again as I got sucked back into that hellscape last year.

Besides that I could use some recommendations in the linux/tech/music/trans/queer spaces :) I love a good blog. I mean I am here after all.

Integrating Gemini

It is unfortunate that I have to have /two apps/. But the Lagrange Android Beta has been a godsend and I can't thank Skyjake enough as there is a surprising lack of half decent (or even actually functioning) gemini apps on Android.

But it recently just wiped by subscriptions. So I am relying on my desktop for my local cache of subscriptions and just resyncing when they go away.

I should host my own aggregation feed that I can just subscribe to on any/all browsers.

Conclusion

Yeah! RSS! More reading! Let's do it!

If you have any good blogs def send them over to me either via email or mastodon (both on my capsules landing).

Otherwise, I'll check back around the holidays to see how this panned out.
