Both knowledge & experience can contribute heavily to one's capacity to create, but neither of these is necessary or sufficient in the process of crafting unique art, of course. Sometimes knowing too much can stifle one's originality, in the sense that knowledge and can lead to the creation of work that is less original. This isn't to say there is always a risk to one's originality to acquire additional knowledge, just that one should be aware of the things one is learning and where they're learning them from. To take the same path that many before have taken can be comfortable, but I don't think it's worth it in the end. Some sense of self must be preserved through one's development as an artist otherwise one risks becoming a clone — albeit a lower-rate one — of those they've learned from.
