"'6 stories up in seattle'" 1. "listen to the voices from the loudspeakers"

[c am e]

- loud in the mouth

quiet in the ears

whizzing by life

in an suv of fears

- don't pick him up

he has his own car

he can get his own gas

he can go just as far

- as those who came before

or maybe a bit further

along the paved roads

which don't lead him nowhere

- can we ever leave

trains without steam

are antimonuments to things

we will never see

[c g am]

2. "she ended it a mile earlier"

she gave you another shot

came across the crosswalk

not to be lectured

but to be finally heard

but the first spoken word

cut her soul like a sword

and she would have none of it

though she appeared like a giant

inside she was pliant

and crying

her friend remained strong there

for 10 minutes longer

but a cord inside snapped

this was the last

holding you three together

your faces decide whether

you'll ever get better

people see what they need

in the faces we leave

neither her nor her friend

has yet reached their end

if you were as strong

you could also pretend

3. "words mean differently"

similar words from

different people

can cause trees to fall

in different forests

hey how are you

can mean several things

depending on people

and surroundings

& don't forget

the medium is the massage

right right right right right

you can say things wrong all night

hungry for food

but i can't know inside

i pass by

and talk with my friend

senders still matter

in this day & age

despite everything being

just pretend

& don't forget

the medium is the massage

carefully choose but

you can say good things & lose

—–—–—–

4. "tj's fight"

i noah guy

& he got in a fight

to protect some people

he's a great guy

but his name isn't guy

he does some math sometimes

at home for fun

to figure out which price

is best for us to get

so my cousin and i

and my friend

can race a few more times

he shouldn't return

to mexico ever

he says with a laugh

this guy is the best

i'll see him again never

—–—–—–

5. "fitting room"

it's inevitable that others

will try as you do

to fit into clothes

passed down through

generations of giants

their times were much tougher

and maybe much better

we collectively buffer

the children we have

from the things that we hate

which is all new

and not all that great

suns always shine

and rivers still flow

despite what they say

on the devil's radio

in the devil's music

through the devil's note

we believe what we can

based on what they wrote

because change sometimes sucks

and sometimes it's fine

but life is what matters

and sometimes it's fine

the blue bird sings

& the red bird croons

the blue bird dies

& the red bird survives

6. "cj's eatery"

a warm spring sun shines in through the walls

we all see each other as before

we have never met some of us

the water that drips from our eyes falls

shadows cast long on the opposite walls

a triad of smells from similar souls

and another one swept up with the times

the street we were born on is alive and it calls

we move because we have to

our legs cripple themselves gently

our arms flail but fail to succeed

in stopping our bodies from doing what they have to

so thank you for letting us lie

in your room with a view

for a few bright rainy nights

now it's back to the ride

with all of us more in our heads
