my gardening companion was warning me about the snake near my feet; i was saying that Guernsey does not have snakes and that it was probably a slow worm. after a few exchanges like that we established that it was in fact a slow worm: Anguis fragilis. i have not seen one this size before. sadly these are normally seen as roadkill, usually smaller.
i estimate that it was about 30 cm in length: possibly 15 years old.
