Kendra ran fast, faster than she had ever run before. But this tall creature that she had encountered was incredibly quick. It had not been one hundred yards before he caught up to her, grabbing her around the waist. She was lifted into the air, arms flailing and legs kicking, screaming all the while. His strength was incredible, and she knew in hand to hand combat she wouldn't stand a chance. It ended up that she did not have to. A moment later she found herself tossed back to the ground a dozen feet away.
Then the man was hovering over her again. He was furnishing the largest spear that she had not noticed before. He looked down at her disdainfully, and then turned his back to her.
She fumbled for the holster strapped to her side that the captain had insisted she take along. Her hand closed about it, an alien metal within her hand. Could she really shoot someone, even with a weapon that was just meant to stun? But before she can decide what to do, a terrifying noise broke out across the lands about her.
"What is that?" Kendra asked, really doubting that the man would be able to understand her.
The man cast her an angry look, and made a gesture indicating that he wanted her to stay quiet. Though Kendra and this giant were very different, she understood what he was trying to convey. He clutched his spear with both hands and took a few protective steps ahead of her, again gesturing for her to stay put.
The inhuman sound echoed across the forest again. It was much closer now. The trees shook with the power of the cry. Kendra's blood ran cold. She had no idea what this was. Aboard ship all she had to contend with where other humans like herself. But this was something entirely new.
The ground began to shake. It was rhythmic, as though something we're running this way. Something worse than this monster of a man was heading their way, and it was dawning on the young girl that, for now, this man was not her enemy. He was her protector, a feeling she had never had before. Kendra, her hand still on the stun pistol in the holster, decided to draw it. She brought her hands together, clutching the weapon before her, prepared to fire it for the first time. Whatever was causing the ground to shake, it might be a match even for this man.
