Directory of hardware compatibility for modern retrocomputing.

At this moment, I am still thinking about a best format to present the information here using Gemtext.

For now, mostly headers and basic lists are available, but things might change anytime.

This will be an ever-growing list of old hardware that could be used for modern retrocomputing.

If you are looking for a specific piece of hardware but wondering if it will work for your purposes, please check this list, it might help you clear your doubts.

Also, if you would like to collaborate, please send me any information about hardware that could be usefull.

Please note that I have most experience mostly with Japanese vintage computers only, and very limited with western ones.

Also, I don't know if these items can be obtained easily or at all outside Japan, so please investigate that by yourself, but in general, most the items here are easy to obtain in Japan at an affordable price.

Non-NEC Keyboards for PC-98

There are actually not many, but the few that exist are usually excellent mechanical keyboards.

If you ever find one from the list below, do not hesitate to acquire.

So far I only own one of these, but I am aware of at least two more brands/models, but unfortunately I couldn't test them, so I don't know if they are mechanical or membrane.

Fitness FKB-106W : full mechanical keyboard (not membrane). Resemebles clicky cherry switches, but slightly different.

Power Supply Replacement

Modern switching power supplies that output 5v and 12v in a tiny form factor.

Useful for replacing old internal vintage PSUs or create your own external one.

Meanwell RD-50A : 110,220v to 5v, -5v and 12v at 54 Watt.
Sodial S-12-12 : 110,220v to 12V @ 1Amp
XPJ-01C : 110,220v to 5, 9 or 12v @ 1 or 2 Amp (depending on model)
SMPS-XX-A00Y : 110,220v to 12v @ XX watts & Y Amps (i.e. SPMS-24-A002 => 24Watt, 2Amp)

Video Converters

Cheap options if you don't want to buy a Framemeister, OSSC or similars.

Generic VGA S-VIDEO RCA to HDMI : Input NTSC or PAL. Output HDMI. Tested with NTSC-J PC-6001 and PAL Atari ST on Japanese TV.

Expansion Units and Boards

List of uncommon internal or external boards or accessories to expand the capabilities or functionalities of a computer.

ADA-7008-1 : Fujitsu FM-7 expansion board with two additional slots.
PC-6011 : An expansion board with 3 cartridge slots for the PC-6001
PCG8100 : Internal sound board for the PC-8001 and 8001mkII.
PCG8200 : Internal sound board for the 8001mkII.
PC-88VA-12 : Internal Sound Board for the NEC PC-8800 series. With FDD Connector
BUFFALO IFC-USP : PCI SCSI Interface for external MO-Drives.

C-BUS Boards for PC-98 compatible computers

List of uncommon or rare C-BUS boards for PC-98 compatible computers such as NEC or EPSON computers.

Buffalo WindowAccelerator WSN-A2F

Combines graphical acceleration, PCM and 86K sound source functions. 2Mb video memory version.

Buffalo WindowAccelerator WSN-A4F

Same as before, but with 4Mb video memory instead of 2Mb.

DIP (1): 1=Do not use FM sound functions; 3*=Use FM sound functions

DIP (2): 1=Use high brightness setting; 3*=Do not use high brightness setting

CON (3): Expansion connector. Cable is sold separately.

As for compatibility, the WSN-A2F/4F boards are compatible with any PC-98 that has at least a i386 processor.

PC-98 computers with 8086/V30/80286 can use only the FM sounce source function.

Using a Melco CPU Accelerator on a 80286 will allow to use the WindowAccelerator function as well.

Things to consider:

The computer models PC-9801 UX and EX are incompatible with the FM sound functions.

The computer PC-9801 ES is incompatible with the PCM sound functions.

The computers EPSON PC-486 (except PRO-486) and PC-586 can be used only in desktop/normal mode

This board is supported with Windows 3.1 (Enhance Mode only), Windows 95 (using manufactured driver) and MS-DOS (only FM sound functions).
