Lately, I define my free time as the amount of time I will not sleep until the next day. This is unfortunate, yet unavoidable until my personal situation changes. That also means my only chance to get something done, other than working for my day job or taking care of the family, is often brought down because of the tiredness that built up during the day.
However, sometimes I do something useful, be it contributing some code to a free software project, writing an entry to the capsule like this, writing music or playing the guitar or drums. Unfortunately, this means little sleep for the next day, which means being tired for the whole day, or even two or three days after. And fatigue can only build up if this is continuously done.
Sometimes, I tried to revert the fatigue by... well, sleeping more hours. Paradoxically enough, this usually did not work, probably because too much fatigue had already built up during the week.
Then, this week I tried something slightly different: falling sleep to music - ideally, listening to full albums or long tracks. The first time I did this, it was not really intentional: since I forcibly had to put my PinePhone on a shelf for (both technological and mental) stability reasons, I decided to give it some use as an Internet-powered music player and web browser. And these are tasks the PinePhone would pull off decently, despite the horrendous battery life.
Surprisingly, not only I felt asleep to it much faster than I had expected, but also during the process I could even feel music differently. Instead of fixating so much into the technical details in the music, my brain was concentrated on the mood and dynamics of the songs. Even simple things like a louder voice, or an instrumental that suddenly stopped, would made me almost overreact from my almost-unconscious state.
Additionally, the day after I was greatly surprised to see that, despite going to bed at almost 2AM, I was not feeling terrible as usual, but quite energetic in fact. Two more tests during the following days also showed similar results.
I am not sure if this nothing but coindicence. Anyhow, it is still a good opportunity to listen to some gems I had stored on my local cloud for some time now.
Good night!
