Domain Names Are the Most Persistent Thing on the Internet

2023-06-27 14:13:38Z

Domain name's underlying infrastructure

Domain names. For example: jacksonchen666.com is a domain name.

Domain names have multiple parts for it to work for some things. For example, a domain name with a website will need at least the following:

You can change all of them without having to change the domain name, so tomorrow you can have a completely different DNS name server, a completely different web server, and maybe even your own domain registrar.

In my example, the domain jacksonchen666.com had its Domain registrar, DNS Name servers, Web server and Email servers changed at least twice or even three times. And to this day, it's still my domain name.

You could also change the owner of the domain name, but I've never done that yet.

A domain name can last for quite a while

A domain name doesn't die as easily as a YouTube channel could. A YouTube channel could get terminated in 2 seconds and most people wouldn't notice (since they're extremely distracted by the garbage the YouTube algorithm is feeding them).

A YouTube channel calling for help

The process for reporting a domain name is... a little more complicated. You must get the Registrar abuse contact then tell them about the problematic domain (scam/phishing/whatever). You can also report it to Google's safe browsing thing (which also benefits Firefox users, by the way) but in the end, you probably won't lose your domain name in 2 seconds like on YouTube (unless you do things against the rules).

Because domain names aren't as easy to take down compared to YouTube channels, you can last quite a bit more than you could on YouTube (assuming you're not illegitimate).

So far, my domain name has survived beyond pretty much all my accounts including youtube, instagram, facebook, twitter, reddit, and titkok. While my accounts on those platforms existed before I got my domain, I do not have accounts on them anymore. My domain could even last longer than sourcehut, github, gitlab, libera.chat, oftc.net, hackint.org, every single other place that I'm on, although it doesn't look like any of those are going away any time soon.

Shilling for domain names?

Am I just shilling domain names? Yeah probably.
