I believe everything I do should serve a well-defined purpose and bring value to myself or to others. Value meaning enjoyment, entertainment, knowledge, learning, advice, mental challenge, etc.
This ties into two of my core principles:
1. Do what's valuable.
2. Success comes from a clarity of purpose.
When I apply those principles to blogging, I have to ask a few questions:
- Why bother writing a gemlog?
- What's the point?
- What will I get out of it?
- What will anyone reading get out of it?
- Is this a waste of time and energy better spent elsewhere doing something more valuable?
- How can it fill a need in my efforts to learn, research, write, think, and create?
I considered all this and came to the conclusion that I'd like a place to explore the philosophies (or "guiding principles," as I call them) I've adopted over the years and try to practice in my life. Do some of the need updating or revisiting? How have they served me, how can I implement them more faithfully or effectively, and what can I do differently to improve my creative work and to improve myself as a free-thinking, truth-seeking human?
So I'll use this as an exercise in my pursuit to question everything because I believe careful consideration, the application of logic, and a little real-world trial and error reveals the truth. Living according to the truth is how I'll become both wise and authentic, two qualities I deeply desire to possess.
