I heard about Mastodon a few months ago but I didn't worry about trying it out. I had a facebook account a really long time ago then I stopped using it. Instead of deleting the useless social media account, I stopped accessing it for a long time and now the social media giant don't let me access the account because they think it's a suspicious activity.
Anyway, I decided to try out Mastodon recently. I follow distrotube(DT) on youtube and he host his own Mastodon instance. So I joined it. I don't have any followers yet but people still see what I say in public timeline. I don't follow anyone yet and I still see what people say. I should say, I love the Mastodon experience. Default web UI works fine for me. Though I hate its light theme, dark theme looks cool. Also, I know that I can use a different Mastodon client if I don't like the web client.
What I noticed a lot is the freedom Mastodon provides. I don't know anyone on mastodon in real life and that's because my real world friends don't actually know about mastodon. But I found many mastodon instances and I saw people posting vast variety of things from NSFW content to political thoughts. If they do it in a normal social media platform they'll probably get banned. The mastodon instance I'm currently in bans few other mastodon servers for as they violates code of conduct of our instance, but that's perfectly fine. If I don't like that ban I can move to a different instance. I love how this platform resist censorships by default. If I don't like someone on Mastodon, I can block or mute him. It's me who decides what I see and not a big tech corporation. If I get banned from the current instance I'm in, I can join a new one [or host my own].
I don't know much about other parts of the fediverse yet. I will expand my knowledge on this cool concept. Fediverse will be the ultimate solution for free speech on social media.
