i was using maemo mostly on droid4.
and on pinephone i was mostly using postmarketos with sxmo. i don't use the postmarketos suspend function, which can save battery life. if the phone suspends, then it can be waken up only by incoming sms or call. but i have no sim card, and even disabled the modem before turning the device up for the first time.
now for several days i run maemo on it, and i enjoy it so much.
first of all, the battery life got much much better. i expressed it on maemo irc chat, and someone confirmed that it is idling much more under maemo.
secondly, i have ported 'live wallpaper' from old maemo fremantle to maemo leste. i think a couple of years ago. but i really enjoy the shermans aquarium live wallpaper, and also there is this cool wallpaper where the tram goes in the city, and if you have an email, you get the notification on the billboard. (:
you can also see there the moon and the sun. so n900 screen was smaller than droid4 screen, and much smaller than pinephone screen, and i can see the tram that gets out of the background picture, as well as the sun or the moon position. (:
i was running pidgin on postmarketos and in sxmo i was moving different windows to different workspaces. and sxmo is limited by 4 workspaces, i did not find a way to reconfigure it, i guess i need to recompile it for that. under maemo i was running 46 pidgin windows today, and it was totally fine. very useful.
the worst thing about maemo on pinephone is the maemo keyboard. pinephone doesn't have hardware keyboard, if you didn't buy the pinephone keyboard, and maemo is hard to use without it. because maemo onscreen keyboard doesn't type in any input fields, but only in the fields of the specially patched for maemo gtk and qt replacements. that's the nokia design, blame them. and if on droid it is possible to trigger onscreen keyboard by tapping hardware 'search' button, on pinephone it is only possible by tapping in the input field.
but i tried
today, it has maemo specific patches, and it is able to resize the current window in the docking mode, it is able to type in any input field, etc. my only issue with it now that it doesn't work in portrait mode, i'll discuss it with the author.
otherwise it is amazing.

pinephone is convenient to use with web in portrait mode, but all the programs, including browsers from regular devuan repos only work in default mode, which is landscape. all the browsers from maemo repos except qtwebbrowser also turn the screen to landscape mode. only qtwebbrowser is able to work in portrait mode. of course lagrange gemini browser i packaged is also not able to switch to portrait mode.
