i use gentoo since 2005, if i was less stupid i would start using it earlier.
i have been written an utility for rpm based distros that would have http path with src.rpm files in config file, would download src.rpm package, try to build it. check output, get dependencies, if any, repeat the process recoursively.
that way i was able to build extra software for my redhat systems. also i was able to update rhels by not having access to binaries but to sources only.
i also played with debians back then and debian had apt-source (or some similar name). i think it does not exist anymore. it was able to build packages too, but not all, kernel or libc were not supported.
then i installed gentoo.

i didn't know what are use flags before i installed it and started using it. i immediately got hooked. i like having simple and minimalistic system and with gentoo i am able to control dependencies. i don't want this and this functionality, so i don't have those dependencies.
back then i was using dial-up internet and because of fine tuned control of dependencies i was able to download packages and dependencies much faster than on debian.
then at some point i switched to funtoo. i thought drobbins was doing better job by using git instead of rsync to update portage tree. rsync could make my laptop battery weak, and it took long, with git it was very fast.
project bdfl was a red flag i ignored.

then i went back to gentoo.
i realized democrary is better than clever dictators. gentoo got git syncing of portage tree eventually. there are different people and all of the opinions and desires are taken in to consideration.
in funtoo there was a dictator, and i started to not like some decisions. eventually they decided to leave irc for discord.
that was not understandable to me, why would i use closed source app to get support for open source project.
i stayed in irc room a bit bit then was banned from it, forced to come to discord.
when they force me i do the opposite of what they want.
i reinstalled all my computers with gentoo.

Discord, really? For a FOSS project? This sounds very stupid.

I've been a Gentoo user for about a year now, and have occiasionally mused about switching to Funtoo. What decisions did Drobbins make that you weren't a fan of?

well, many, i don't remember already. but what i remember - community is small, it is harder to get help. and they have bugs that don't exist in gentoo. and it is a problem to make the devs fix those often.
plus it is not rolling release anymore. it has releases. and you have to be on some release where you have much much older software versions than you would have on gentoo. it becomes wore like debian.
caused lots of problems on the server, i had to use very old prosody (jabber server) and i couldn't build some newer software versions even by hand (like biboumi or lemmy).
and then they forced the discord which was untolerable to me. they just banned everyone from irc chat to force.
