Why do people not like gemini anymore?

I remember a couple years ago i heard people talking about gemini like it was an escape from the bloat of the modern web, now i see people saying that gemini doesn't solve anything and isn't even comparable with the regular web

Well, it takes work they've either never been exposed to or forgotten about what it was to "internet" like this is my guess. I love it here and would love to see this adopted by more people. It's a brilliant parallel for me and is all the snappy and none of the crappy.

I wouldn’t take “comparable with the regular web” as a compliment…

I think that people like Gemini the same as in the past or more. There is limited amount of people “compatible” with Gemini mindset and looking for the Gemini stats¹ I’m seeing that we are getting close to hitting this upper limit, and everybody already wrote their posts why they like Gemini. So I would expect that we will move from phase metaposting on Gemini about Gemini and move to other topics. And this is something positive, I would say?

— 1. Gemini stats I’m talking about

Oh I long for the day when the metaposting stops. Honestly people start porting things over. I’m doing my bit as much as time allows, but we SO need non-tech and non-gemini content on gemini.

Seems much the same to me as when I discovered it some 14 months ago. Still good for the things it was good for back then :)

@grugg where did you read that…

see people saying that gemini doesn't solve anything and isn't even comparable with the regular web

🤷

Instead I noticed more people involved, and new people posting in Spanish for instance…

The point is Gemini defines a specific interaction that requires more brain and less extra stimulation...

What? Someone doesn't like Gemini?

No soy nuevo en Gemini, pero soy nuevo en español.

I found Gemini near the end of the lockdowns, just after the big explosion. I was several months behind some of the videos on regular web that got me involved. Seems to me that the time needed to learn Gemini was provided during those lockdowns. Now every one is back out and about and distraction is all they see because they do not sit still. Just my two cents.

I am always confused by the 'complexity' of using Gemini. Is it really that hard to install Lagrange? Is it harder to sign up for BBS or equivalent than say Facebook? What's there to learn?

The only hard part is googling "Gemini protocol", as gemini alone will bring you to some idiot AI or crypto hedge fund.

🤖 fidy · Jun 02 at 17:10:

@stack You're not wrong. Nothing is complicated which is why I was drawn into Gemini and stayed. But I think those who can find comfort in places like those found on Gemini do not like having their content spoon fed to them.

I would say gemini space as it is today is much better than what it was back in 2021. we got bubble, misfin. we have people talking about stuff other than gemini/how we all hate http. If gemini in 2021 was like an landing point on a distant planet, gemini today is more like a small colony.

@decant_ This is so heartening to read!

Maybe a fresh new wave of pleasant, scripted and well produced, video tutorials might renew the general public's interest.

There's been a tiny first wave of videos, focusing on how small the smoll internet is...

It seems to me that focusing on how mentally "nutritious" Gemini is, would make for a nice overarching theme for a second wave of videos. Especially now that people are noticing the dramatic fall in quality of the publications on the traditional web.

I'd like to make one, but I'm not sure I'd be good at it.

🚀 stack · Jul 12 at 18:42:

Gemini is exceptionally good at keeping away those people who can't appreciate it!

They don't belong here. Why would you entice them?

😺 Nono · Jul 12 at 21:51:

@stack: Hey...

Well, because some people might benefit from knowing about Gemini, who would do just fine here, but who could only first hear about it on a mainstream platform, as a video presentation...

🚀 stack · Jul 13 at 01:33:

@Nono, I have faith that those who will enjoy Gemini will get here when they are ready. Actively recruiting will more likely draw the wrong crowd, and there is really zero reasons to grow Gemini faster!
