Thrash's car

When I was a teenager, one of the people in my friendship group was known as Thrash. Supposedly he got the name because he rode a moped and he thrashed it. This was before I knew him. By the time I knew him, he had a car, but the nickname stuck.

He was working in a supermarket, and he became a trainee manager. He was enthusiastic about his future career, which I liked because I had no idea what to do with my life, and I was going to university to put off the decision.

One weekend we were all invited to a party out in the countryside. I think it was a birthday party, but I can't remember whose. I didn't have any way to get out there, but Thrash said he could give me a lift. He was already taking someone else. So the three of us got in his car and drove out. There was a mobile disco in a marquee, and we weren't allowed in the house except for the loo.

Eventually the disco bloke stopped and people produced sleeping bags to sleep in the marquee. I hadn't planned for this, so I asked Thrash if I could sleep in his car. He gave me the keys and I lay down on the back seat. It wasn't so comfortable, but it would do.

Before I could get to sleep, I heard voices.

"This is Thrash's car."

"Let's turn it over!"

Three or four of them started rocking the car. I didn't take them seriously at first, but the rocking got quite severe. I yelled at them a few times and they stopped.

One of them says "I've got one of these, and they only make four different keys."

He tries his key, and it works! He and his friends pile in with me. The one with the keys starts up the car and rockets down to long drive way to the road. Thrash had one of those car horns that plays a tune - Colonel Bogey? Woody Woodpecker? I forget. The "key" bloke give this a few blasts, because he knows Thrash will hear his car disappearing.

As we get near the main road, I have a go at persuading them that they've had some fun, but they should give Thrash his car back. Amazingly, this works, and they turn round and drive back to the house. Thrash is not best pleased, and decides that the three of us should all sleep in the car for security. And he wants my place in the back. So I finish the night in the driver's seat, and I don't get much sleep.
