Solar alert

Issued on 2023 Aug 05 0745 UTC

A moderate geomagnetic storm was observed globally as the NOAA planetary Kp index reached 7- between 03:00 UTC and 06:00 UTC today. This is the result of the CME arrival to Earth which was observed on Aug 02. Locally over Belgium, only minor geomagnetic storm conditions were observed. Further active to moderate geomagnetic storm conditions may be expected in the next 48 hours.

The 10 MeV proton flux has crossed the 10 pfu threshold level at 11:00 UTC today. It is currently above the threshold level and it is increasing. It started to increase around 8:30 UTC today after the GOES M1.6 flare from NOAA AR 3386 which peaked at 7:22 UTC today. The proton flux is expected to remain elevated in the next 24 hours.

Issued on 2023 Aug 05 1652 UTC

A partial halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has been seen in SOHO/LASCO-C2 images at 07:12 UTC today. This partial halo CME is associated with a GOES M1.6 flare from NOAA Active Region (AR) 3386 and the filament eruption below the same AR region. This halo CME has a projected angular width of about 120 degrees and a projected speed of about 1000 km/s. Earth directed component of CME has been identified. Further analysis is on-going to estimate the arrival time of potential glancing blow of this CME.
