The CIA World Factbook is a declassified, public domain reference prepared by the US Central Intelligence Agency since the 1970s. It provides facts and figures on the demographics, geography, communications, government, economy, and military of US-recognised international entities, as well as information on major oceans and the world as a whole.
This Gemini version of the Factbook is derived from:
The official web version at www.cia.gov
The official version is updated once per week, but this Gemini version is updated once per month, early in the morning of the 1st day. The CIA's webserver does not respond to If-Modified-Since headers in a way which reflects whether individual pages have been modified, so it's difficult to do anything other than download everything anew whether it's changed or not. Doing this once a week when most articles do not change weekly is wasteful. Once a month is plenty, this isn't a news resource.
The Gemini conversion is not complete, e.g. the maps and appendices are not here, but all the the countries/regions are. I have made some very minor formatting improvements, e.g. geographic coordinates are shown here as "64°00' N, 26°00' E" rather than "64 00 N, 26 00 E", and areas are given in units of "km²" instead of "sq km". Aside from minor things like this, the information is identical to the official version. All factual errors or geopolitical biases remain the property of Uncle Sam.
