Where to Begin

One of the big things that has been stopping me from starting my journey towards de-spotifying was losing the entire catalogue of music that I'd accumulated over the years. Though I always understood that I couldn't feasibly download every song from my library, I still wanted a list of my entire catalogue to peruse and cherry-pick songs and albums I would want going forward.

I used that roadblock as an excuse for so long that I never actually took the next step to find a tool that could help me overcome it. But now that I've set my mind to the task, I found the perfect tool for the job.

Exportify

Exportify

Exportify allows you to export any saved playlist on your Spotify account as a text file. I used it to export every playlist and my entire library of liked songs, and it was complete within a couple minutes.

I opened up the Liked songs .csv in libreoffice and after removing a few unnecessary columns and adding filters to the remaining ones, I'm now able to search and sort through my entire catalogue.

Whether you're thinking of leaving Spotify or just want to deep-dive into your saved music collection, this tool is very handy and easy to use.

VLC, radio-browser, and SomaFM

SomaFM

While I rebuilt my digital music library, I wanted to continue listening to new music. Something I've had on my radar for a while but haven't felt the need for because of Spotify was good old-fashioned radio. With the internet, you can listen to almost anything broadcast from anywhere in the world.

Radio-browser is a community support wiki of radio stations from all over the world. I've found their tagging system very useful and I've used it to to find a number of stations I now listen to regularly. You can play these stations right in the browser, or you can copy the URL into a media player like VLC and stream it that way.

SomaFM is a wonderful listener-supported radio station that serves a number of programs with a wide range of musical genres. They even have a simple mobile app you can use to listen to and explore their different broadcasts.

Like most community-driven projects, they're dependant on listener donations. So if you enjoy what they do, send a few dollars their way.
