Going through the digital, actual, shoeboxes has been interesting. I stumbled across a video "trailer" I made for my gaming buddies before the inaugural session. If memory serves, I'd used ffmpeg to mux together an audio track and a still-image slideshow. I didn't have much money at the time, so I only used open source software. The source material for said video trailer have been lost to time, but I do remember having an ffmpeg config file that would make your eyes bleed. I've only the finished product.
That said, I'd written an opening narration for the trailer, so you hear me talking over a black screen for about 90 seconds. The narration does its job, unfortunately. I say "unfortunately" because I've been listening to my years-ago self read through this 90 second segment several times. This is first time I've ever transcribed my past self, and I hope to never do it again! So... weird!
The three suns rise once again. Their auburn and yellow rays pierce the darkness, galloping over the ice-blue waters of the Airstone Sea. They charge over the icy bergs floating in its warm waters, racing up the chalky palisades of the Righteous Rim. Slowly, the rays creep over its cliff-face, riding through an overgrown ruin. A moment later, the three suns' rays burst across the lands: your home.
Three hundred and seven years have passed since the founding of Darkhome. The horrific thousand-year interregnum, the Long Night, is passing. The light of civilization has been rekindled in the lands of Ignar. The Dark Elves, long secluded in the depths of the Backlash Mountains, have risen. Their Darkhome is the city of plenty, of industry and innovation, of art and culture, of trade and commerce: a flickering flame holding back the darkness.
Much was cut down during the Long Night. Though the darkness is fading, magic and its users are shunned or feared. The Gods' names were lost, their temples forgotten. Knowledge wilted. History rotted. Culture decayed.
With the Three Suns at your back, seek out the legacy of a forgotten past. Behold natural wonders beyond description. Hold in your hands the artifacts and marvels of a lost people. Ride the winds of the open seas, where the thunder always rolls. Blaze a trail through an untamed wilderness. Or, sip tea as the Three Moons rise, wreathed in petals of starlight.
Your actions, your choices, tell the story. Welcome to Ignar!
I saw fit to add a slideshow of fantastical landscapes I found across the interwebs, while "Journey Through the Portal" by Audiomachine played. Listening to it more than 7 years later, it's still a solid "epic" music track.
The last bit of the narrative, about "your actions, your choices?" That was my past self differentiating the coming campaign from those we'd played before. The prior post details those experiences.
In the next post: the Dark Elves and Darkhome.
