The second horse moved silently to face me and halted. For several uncomfortable minutes we looked at each other, completely still. My left foot was beginning to ache from the prolonged standing and I shifted my weight clumsily to the right. The horse nodded, and a searing pain cut through my head. The horse stepped back quickly, its tail whipping around wildly.
A voice emerged through the receding headache, offering an apology. It was pleasant, with a hint of a perhaps Germanic accent. The pain was gone as quickly as it had appeared, and I could now let go of my head to look up. The world was shifting back into sharp focus. The horse was looking at me intently, now positioned farther than before, but still facing me directly. It seemed to be glowing under the bright lights against the total blackness behind it.
"We must maintain a distance between us until you get used to this", the voice continued. The horse was still looking at me, its mouth not moving. "No, I am not Mr. Ed," came the voice as the horse turned its head to look at the other one. It returned its full attention to me, and the voice sounded once more.
"Let us take a walk now; it is not healthy to remain stationary for too long." The horse turned and started away from the spotlit circle, down a sandy path leading to the darkened corner of the giant tent. "I understand that you are interested in our technologies."
I followed the horse, as if in a dream, to the rhythmic clacking of hooves. As I reached the edge of the brightly lit area, the lights turned off with a loud bang, and darkness quickly enveloped us; I could barely make out the massive animal in front of me. We walked silently for a long while, and then the horse spoke again.
