I wonder if individuals who are participating in this new newsgroup would like to post news about activities which are occuring during this special year for Baha'is. ---- From: Sandra Hereld Date: May 8, 1992, 11:38:45 PM To: soc.religion.bahai In article <DCORBETT.9...@sirius.uucp> dcorbett%s...@uunet.uu.net writes: >I wonder if individuals who are participating in this new newsgroup >would like to post news about activities which are occuring during >this special year for Baha'is. The year 21 April 1992 until 20 April 1993 has been designated a "Holy Year" for Baha'is all over the world. This designation is in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the passing of the Founder of the Baha'i Faith, Baha'u'llah. Baha'u'llah died just before dawn on 29 May 1892. Around the world Baha'is will commemorate this event through various prayer services and other meetings. In addition to marking the passing of Baha'u'llah, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of "Baha'u'llah's Covenant." This term refers to Baha'u'llah's explicit appointment of an individual (His son, `Abdu'l-Baha) to interpret His Writings and to serve as an example of the Baha'i life. This Covenant was perpetuated by `Abdu'l-Baha in the appointment of a "Guardian" (interpreter and leader) and the instructions for the election of a "Universal House of Justice" (to pass judgement on items not explicitly discussed in Baha'u'llah's Writings). The Covenant of Baha'u'llah has served to prevent division and schism within the Baha'i Faith (unlike all previous religions). Baha'is believe that it's unifying power will serve to unite the whole world. The inauguaration of Baha'u'llah's Covenant will be celebrated around the world by Baha'is in late November. The center-piece of these celebrations will be a gathering of some 30,000 Baha'is in New York City. This is planned to be the most diverse gathering of people ever held in the history of the world, a testament to the unifying power of Baha'u'llah's Covenant. In addition to these two main events, Baha'is around the world are taking time this year to individually contemplate their personal relationship with Baha'u'llah. To consider in their hearts the nature and importance of His life and His teachings. "...to reflect with due solemnity upon the redemptive purpose of the life of the most precious Being ever to have drawn breath on this planet [Baha'u'llah]." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Kalantar Department of Computer Science kala...@cs.cornell.edu Upson Hall, Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853 (607) 255-1165 ----------------------------------------------------------------------
