January 2024

Posted on 2024-02-04

Nota: While this post is published on the 4th of Feb, it has been written on the 31st of Jan but I was unable to publish it until now^^.

As I'm not as active as I used to be in the gemini space (read below), writing monthly update (only here and not on my blog) is an attempt to keep it alive and stay connected with other geminauts. We'll see if I managed to keep this habit every month…

Gemini

As said above and before, I haven't been active in the gemini space lately. I barely looked into cosmos / antenna between september and December last year and while I've been browsing the space more since the new year, I'm only looking at cosmos 2 or 3 times a week. The Good news with the smolweb and gemini is that it is slow, meaning that 2 or 3 times a week is enough to stay up to date with most gemlog entries (thanks to cosmos aggregating most of them). At the same time, I know I "miss" some by not going to places like bbs or station (my TLS cert for station has expired and didn't bother to re-creacte an account), but I'm at "peace" with that as of now.

My last gemlog entry (before this one) has been written in mid July, almost 7 months ago, and I haven't worked on any related gemini project (GTL, discogem or other ideas) in H2 last year. I have a (good?) idea for making tinylogs better and more widely used, but I need time to actually work on it… I also need to migrate my different capsules to my homelab (right now on a droplet on digital ocean) and fix the encoding of the [french aggregator].

But I have so many items in my todolist that it is impossible to do them all in the spare time I have. At the end, it is all about priority and I haven't prioritized anything gemini related for a long time. Hopefully, starting writing here again and being more present might raise gemini related items higher in the priority list, but only time will tell :]

Blog update

Since the new year, I have worked a bit on updating my [web blog], with a slightly reworked homepage, but more importantly making it a real citizen of the [IndieWeb]. You can [read more about this update on my blog]. It means that it now supports [webmentions] (among other things), the web version that inspired [my RFC for gemini mentioned].

I also intend to write a bit more on my blog, with a series of posts about my homelab setup since my move to south of France last year, another one about my backup strategy and other indieweb releated posts. That is a lot (for me at least) but it is nice to have good objectives. I'm not too worried about not achieving them but I still want to do more, let's see where it goes :).

I posted 5 posts in January, which is a high number for me in a month. Maybe I should prevent myself to publish more than once a week to have posts in advance… But I don't like the idea. I prefer publishing a post once it is ready. I only "limit" myself to maximum one post a day. To be fair, it didn't happen often that I had more than one post ready on the same day, so this "rule" is the simplest to follow :D.

Work travel

Unusual topic for me, but I've been traveling 2 weeks in a row for work this month, once in the UK and once in Paris. 2 weeks in a row didn't happen often in the past years (which was great)! While I enjoy the occasional travel to Paris to see my family there with a company paid trip, I don't enjoy traveling as much as I did in the early years of my career (and at a personal level try to limit them a lot too).

When I started my current role, almost 10 years ago, I used to travel almost 2 or 3 times every month, which was way too much. After some time, it went down to once a month, which at the time I found perfect. I enjoyed traveling and discovering French, European and some US places. I don't as much at all… Once a quarter feel more than enough now…

But it seems the "old world" is catching up after 4 years of no or close to no travel: none in 2020 / 2021, maybe 2 or 3 times in 2022 and same in 2023. While I try to push back to avoid unnecessary travel sometimes it isn't possible so I'm back in plane or trains in these cases.

One big issue I have now that I'm not in Paris anymore: using mainly trains is impossible… It either requires to go back to Paris (already a long train trip) and then taking a train to wherever or taking very slow set of trains or taking another transportation method. State of railroad and trains in France really saddens me… And often cost way more than plane tickets (which makes it difficult to justify at work to pay more for slower transport that might add a hotel night on top of travel).

Anyway, I'll try to limit them this year, but seems like there are clear signs of "traveling is back to normal", which is a shame.

Stay safe!
