Inching Forward When it comes to art, all we can reasonably do is edge forward. Scoot closer to the edge of our seats until we realize how little there is under us and how suddenly the thing we have been sitting on has been removed from underneath us without our knowing. In reality the forward-shifting is slow and gradual and we don’t realize that we’re the driving force behind it all. Seats cannot be abandoned until we realize they can no longer support us. The chair we have left behind is never significantly less beneficial for us than the chair immediately proceeding it, but can be substantially more ergonomic than its far removed ancestors. We stand up most of the time anyway or at least we should. But it is important to sit down sometimes when our legs are tired of carrying us. Then we can rest our bodies on one particular product of a particular society.

Sometimes when realize we have inched too far forward we only re-place ourselves on the same seat, too comfortable with how comfortable we recently were. Sometimes when we realize there is far less beneath us than before we take the opportunity to move on to no-bigger & no-better but entirely different things. When we’ve re-sat on the same chair over and over and finally grown tired of making progress that is too small to be recognized by anyone other than our peers, we may eventually realize that we can abandon everything underneath us and start making real & measurable progress. But we recieve rewards for inching forward in our comfortable seats, not for leaving our seats.
