I read an article from someone using a Palm m500 for modern purposes and I'm sorely tempted to try it myself. I actually kind of wish I kept the HP tablet I picked up when they were getting blown out as I loved that version of webOS.

Sorry, I hit send before finishing.

I have considered getting a basic android device taht I can install a Linux distro onto, as well. That might be more fuctional overall.

there are several projects:

๐Ÿ™ norayr [mod] ยท Aug 08 at 11:20:

there is mobian, ubuntu touch, but my impression is that former just takes other project developments and use it on debian, and latter has unportable programs, that depend on specific libraries, plus they also use android kernels, which is not good for me.

i also checked on posmarketos wiki, that palm pre has the same chipset as nokia n900, but alas is marked as not booting. i think maemo leste folks can make it work.

because they know texas instruments omap chipsets well.

Is there any linux mobile experience that doesn't completely suck? I like the idea, but for now deGoogled android a la GrapheneOS seems to strike the best balance between privacy respecting and functional.

๐Ÿšฒ CitySlicker ยท Aug 09 at 20:42:

However, I haven't used Linux on a phone in a long time. Does anyone have any experience with Linux on a phone? Was it usable for a normal person?

๐Ÿ™ norayr [mod] ยท Aug 09 at 22:13:

i guess that degoogled android suggests much much much better user experience. but i personally do not want to rely on something developed by a monopoly, and perceive android as an authoritarian product.

and prefer to rely on communities that develop not polished, but vernacular (i started using that word) software.

it is obvious that our vernacular solutions won't ever be match to something authoritarian monopoly can make. thank you, but no thank you.

look what i have been written about it here:
