My first CD burner cost about $10,000 each CD blank was about $20 and more than half of them were turned into coasters due to bad burns...
The burner form factor was a sealed mid size tower. It was 1x, so a burn was over an hour for a full CD, with an endless 'finalizing' step. a fat SCSI cable connected it, with $60 (pre-inflation) terminator plug. Once burning, we kept our voices down and tiptoed around the office for the fear of a bad burn.

Done.
No mention of cassette tapes, disappointed ;)
Oh, the title says "optical". Well, if that's what you care about, fair enough ;)
I use 3.5” floppies on the regular. Also Zip disks. But that’s magnetic. I only use optical media when reformatting computers that don’t support USB install.
this reminds me of a project I want to do or have done: a capsule that does nothing but custom surveys.
I rarely use optical media these days, but have been considering a CD player for my car to play my collection.
I bought a mobile DVD player in the beginning of this year to rip some of my favorite TV shows which I bought as complete Series DVD sets.
And I will continue to do so as long as I find these sets to buy. Unfortunately it's already impossible to find "Star Trek TNG" as complete DVD set. I saw an offer for a used DVD set of TNG for 300 EUR(!)
I've watched for the first time 007: Casino Royale this week on a used Blu-Ray disk I bought for about 2€. On Amazon you can "buy" the movie for 10€ and rent for 4€. I don't call it nostalgia.

when I got my newest car and found out it has a 6CD changer, I was so excited... finally, I can listen to multiple albums at once without having to switch CD's all the time!!!!
still no aux, but apparently it's not too difficult to mod one in... i could finally have my dream audio setup (at the price of terrible gas mileage ;w;)
Optical Media Survey — Anyone here still use physical media like my nostalgic ass? This is the survey for you: Fill it out, even if you've never used a CD in your life.
