Just learned about this aincent astronomical instrument called an Armillary Sphere and how it was developed as a cross-cultural invention between the great astronomical minds of the europians and chinese. How it works highlights the geometry of our celestial bodies and navigational stars. I find it remarkable that the aincents took the study of astronomy and chronology as seriously as we do the study of information and matter in modern society. Perhaps they were privy to certain understandings of the world which we have become blind to. https://vid.puffyan.us/watch?v=wijjzFWNjlw · 2 years ago

Power Loom. First made in the 1800's, it is the main reason you can go down to a store and buy a shirt, trousers, socks etc. etc.
A few days ago I made ~1m of string from hair. Today (in an unrelated project) I spent 8 hours hand stitching a simple garment. Take away carding machines, ring spinners and looms and the cost of an item of clothing would be in the thousands of dollars. · 2 years ago
