How are people so good at making ASCII art? Are there tools that help with that, like a GIMP or Krita for ASCII? I know you can convert images to ASCII but that doesn't seem to be what most people in gemini space do.

The best ASCII art tool by far is JavE (Java ASCII Versatile Editor). It's old but still runs fine (praise Java) and has all of the state of the art algorithms for both image conversion and freehand drawing. I also use Playscii for adding color in Astrobotany, and there a couple more editors in the ansi art / demo scene space like Moebius and REXPaint. · 2 years ago
