I've a though experiment about AI and art. We have 2 black boxes in front of us. One houses a great digital painter, whom can create any art upon request. He is so good that he is the pinnacle of art. Another is an AI that does it's AI thing to generate images. However, both have improved so much that their results have converged a "peak art" and is identical to each other. Now, as a human. You can ask the black boxes to paint. How do you tell the AI box apart from the human? By definition you can't. From some POV. Humans are wet computers. And there's no way to tell them apart besides invoking magic like soul or asserting humans are special. Which I think is counter productive.

How did Rabbit and Humane screwed up their AI so bad.. I just made my assistant and it works.. and from scratch.

Sometimes I really had enough with the "XXX is too big we need to help the underdogs" crowd. LIke that's easier said then done. I've spent thousands of hours doing FOSS to help dunking on those companies - it is HARD. They have hundreds of talented engineers and I'm on my own. Maybe another 2 people. Sure I want to. But it's more a moon shot then anything.

I managed to pledge() Lagrange on OpenBSD. I'm not sure if the patch should be upstreamed.. The pledge is quite long and I can't guarentee future Lagrange won't break the pledged promises. Also it uses undocunmented pledge promises which.. WTF.

My proposial for a talk using the Gemini spec as an example to guide people to read RFCs has been accepted for COSCUP 2024 this Aug. Anything I should mention about the small web?

Anyone has a backup of the old Gemini protocol speculative specsification? I find the new one quite annyning to read.

Lately I've been really thinking deeply. I don't want to be anti social. But the straight forward solution to climate change seems to be very anti social. Namely, less people, worse economy, lower standard of living, reduce consumption and high prices. It's difficult to not be anti social when there's a pressing climate issue that'll kill everyone eventually. Trading pain now for surviving later is going to be worth it.

Follow-up, exactly is promiting privacy left or right? I've seen arguments both sides and I don't see a clear picture.

Sometimes. actually often, I fotgot I work for one of the "big tech" companies. I don't know if this is cognitive dissonance or something, but I feel like I'm living 2 works. One that people want me to work on and anothing I personally is against and wants to avoid.

How do I find a good psychiatrist?

I guess I'm just frustrated that climate change is a literal live or death issue for everyone. But humans can't corporate and agree on solutions. Politics and economy gets in the way of us solving it. "Humans extinction because it's too expensive and politicians want power" sounds too dumb to be true. But news and situations points into that direction.. Come on. Let's not go to that. I wonldn't care about the topic if I can do the right thing myself and avoid the worst part of it, like how I can be frugal and most financial collasps will blow over me.

I've been reflecting on my position/view on climate change. I feel like I've accidentally ended up in the in-group out-group mentality. Which is not healthy. But also, clearly I'm not a part of the problem. I don't drive, don't buy compulsively, don't fly often, shop locally and what not - everything asked to help the environment. So the problem must exist outside. And I feel I must address it - I literally felt winter disappeared where I live. How can I point to someone/something and say "this is a problem, go fix it" without first identifying myself doing more then good enough?

Lunch though: The best way to combat consumerism and overconsumption is to have a rich-ish fried. Find that he/she buys everything he/she needs even if expensive while refuse to buy crap even though it's cool or cheap. I learned that from my ex-boss.

Apprantly some idiot on the internet is copying my blog posts. Manually modifying so it feels like his own work (not even using a LLM!?). Hosts it GitHub page and the repository is public. I'm usually kind. All my posts are under CC-BY-SA. But this.. is over the line. This is the new low I've seen. WTF, you do know I can see your commit logs, email and file a DMAC takedown right?

I wonder if GPG would gain mainstream adoption as now AI can generate convincing videos. Cryptographically signing whould become a solution to fake videos - not signed, can't trust.

I've been busy and haven't touched the source code of TLGS for a while. I was considering updating the search ranking algorithm. But then I found for certain queries I like my current algorithm. It's gonna be a rabbit hole.

Long shot. I'm abroad right now and will be back in a few days. got chance to buy 2 bottles of liquor tax free. What's your recommended list of Vodka (or other spirit, I tend to drink directly so vodka usually). Budget is unlimited practically.

It's CNY again and I need ot vent for another thing that happens each year. I believe this is a cultural thing. And I can't rant in front of my family or friends - me having a (quite) well paying job doesn't mean I buy luxery or designer items. Like, what's even the point? Also me only carry an beaten up, braded backpack but wears generic clothing doesn't mean I'm broke. That thing is damn tough. It has withstand my abuse for 8 years and still in perfect shape. Fills like it'll survive another 30. It just amortizes well. I just can't find shits and hoodies that does the same and I like enough.

I don't like where we (humans) are right now. Although arguably much better then we are in the past. 1. AI is getting good fast, without sight of diminishing returns. 2. Carbon emissions is still not going down (though slowing). I don't want to sound alaramist. But I feel this is the current 2 major risks the entire human species face. And I am young enough that I might see the consequences unfolding. It's difficult to focuse on your life when there's literal life or death issues going around. Just venting.

I feel like alcholism is my not-so-healthy solution to building new crazy software. The "fuck it, let's try anyways" booze make you feel is difficult to replace. I need a more healthy alternative.

Is is just me or most good news comes out of the EU. Actual good climate laws, forcing USB-C, GDPR and now attempt to regulate AI.

It feels very depressing with people ignoring the very real affect of climate change and warming - I want a good, solid winter!! The woset part is, I can fix this no matter how much money or solar panal I personally throw at the problem. The real visible different I need to add Gigawatts of solar. Which is completely our of any ordinary person't capablity. Just need to vent.

I never have thought I've to learn anatomey twice in my life. First when I was too bored and watched the entire lecture for med students. Now becaused I learned Blender and I want to make human models. Somehow both "anatomy" have nothing in common besides the name of body parts.

Please convince me: AI art creation has been in a bad light due to not respecting artists. But artists already agreed people could download their work and decode it. People could already learn from art. So why is AI learning from art so cnoterversial? My basis is that humans are not holy or magic. We are just wet computers at the very bottom. (From a scientific view). I want to be on the side of artists. But I don't see any reasonable, logical mechanism in which artists can be protected while keeping the line between humans and AI seprate. Since humans and AI both learn. And potentially through the same prrocess (will cite later). There's no difference right? I think I'm in crysis.

Ohy, who's crawler is abusing TLGS? I'm getting constant requests hitting the search API. It's not a big problem due to the low volume. And sicne I log nothing I don't know who is doint it. But you are generating a lot of errors. ,

What's the management style at your workplace? I became a team lead and have kept the "you can do whatever you want, whenever as long as everyone agrees beforehand and benefits the company" style. It works. Everyone finished their work efficiently and delivers good product by all technical standarda. Even picking up tasks that others haven't got to yet. The bottleneck now is really my speed of finding new directions of improvement. Yet somehow other departments complains that we too lax and lazy. What am I doing wrong?
