Have tried OpenBsd a few times and liked it, but what holds me back is lack of support for liba/vaapi etc. I find myself wondering why this is a hurdle for OpenBsd as all of the other BSD family have it implemented without issue? Maybe someone could throw some light onto what makes it an obstacle?

do you really need vaapi? do you experience slowliness during video playback?
i played back videos with cpu on vesa cards in early linux times, vaapi did not exist, it was fine.
on why it is not supported in openbsd: too much work, not a big community, no business interest. who would do the work?
I mean OpenBSD is no good for power constrained applications. I have a X1 carbon with i7-6500U, I'm getting over 8W idle with obsdfreqd enabled!

The reason I would rather use it is simple. Watch a video, either streaming or on a local disk, with vaapi enabled. Cpu Usage 2% Cpu Temp: Maybe a degree or so above idle. Fans: minimal to no rpm change. Without vaapi Cpu: 15% - or more Cpu Temp: 5-7 degree increase Fans: Noitceable increase in speed. To me its a no brainer. Even as far back as the GMA cards this has been available.
