Introducing Gemini: our largest and most capable AI model

What do you all think of this? Does this naming choice have the potential to hurt the Gemini protocol? Or do you not care?

I already have to append the word "protocol" whenever I make google searches about gemini so probably not a big deal that a project that will probably be eventually iterated and replaced exists.

Yep indeed, "Gemini" is already quite a popular name in various domains, tech included. AI models and network protocols are distinct enough that it is probably pretty clear from context what is being referred to.

The language model hype cycle should calm down after a while anyway and these marketing names will likely fade away as the technology becomes a part of everyday computing.

Don't be too alarmed or discouraged. Apparently, there's some other "web3" crypto-blockchain pyramid scheme titled Gemini which every so often releases stupid ambiguous conference videos which highlight the confusion and uncertainty of what they even offer.

For whatever reason, the name "Gemini" is somewhat common in tech projects. Regardless, It's clear to me that this specific protocol we're all on right now *far* more encapsulates the title and what it's meant to represent amongst this new exciting smallnet technology over whatever tf those fat cat nobodies offer.

It's mildly annoying that it screws up keyword searches and existing hashtags like #gemini on mastodon.

there is also

— swedish duo named gemini which produced two albums: gemini and geminism.

posts about them can be tagged with gemini too.

and if activity pub or social networks existed in eighties, they must have contained many gemini posts related to swedish pop scene.

I think it’s probably true that the protocol will probably outlast Google’s AI model… but I feel that it’s kinda like when I tell people I am part of a program called Tinder they look at me weird cuz of the dating app…

could be annoying to have to clarify to some people that the protocol has nothing to do with AI or Google

I'm going to host a gemini server that uses google gemini to generate horoscopes for geminis and accepts the gemini dollar altcoin for payment.

@wasolili 😄

A little, but I'm expecting the AI bubble to burst at some point. There's also already a cryptocurrency called Gemini, though, so it might not be as big of a deal as my paranoid mind wants to believe.

👻 mediocregopher [...] · 2023-12-08 at 08:38:

(Gemini is a crypto exchange, not a currency or web3 project. But yeah, the naming conflict isn't really a big deal in practice.)

🚀 stack · 2023-12-08 at 15:47:

Great. Now in addition to the douche brothers' exchange* we get a douchebag ai. On the positive side, we will no longer be found by normal search engines...

🌧️ miragearchitect · 2023-12-09 at 12:48:

It would cause some concussion, but it's not like gemini was a super original name, a word rarely used or something.

I doubt it's an attack on the protocol by Google

🚀 sparcipx · 2023-12-10 at 17:14:

Sigh. This is going to make it that much harder to find posts about the Coleco Gemini now...
