👋 Your friendly neighborhood cyber witch here! From the US originally but now at home in the Netherlands. I speak mostly English but can make attempts in Dutch, Spanish, French, or let's be honest just about any language that can be machine-translated. Vegetarian, love animals and nature, am probably exactly the stereotype you can imagine me to be. Let's talk!

Does anyone know of a good Gemini translation site? My Greek, Armenian, etc are not so good, but I'd love it if I didn't have to switch to the "big" web to get a quick copy/paste translate. It *seems* like something that would be possible in Gemini.

Why are there so many cuckoo-bananas people on usenet these days? Actually, I guess there aren't that many numerically, but by percentage it's astronomical. I just made a newsgroup account this morning to see how things are going and...yikes! I would really think that these kinds of people would be the types who would have forgotten about usenet by now, but I guess that goes to show what I know.

People are always arguing between vim and emacs, but here I am just using nano all day...

I was rolling my eyes at the incredible sensationalism of this news report until I got to the end of the article where the police of all people actually have the correct take: gemini://gemi.dev/cgi-bin/waffle.cgi/article?https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nltimes.nl%2F2023%2F06%2F08%2Fchatgpt-helping-criminals-make-explosives-commit-cybercrime-report

Checking the non-local news is a habit that's very difficult to break. I try my best to only read the news for my country of residency plus the tech news, as these are all that really matter to me day-to-day. However, it's really difficult not to just click a link and see what's going on in the rest of the world, especially my country of origin. But anytime that I fall into that trap it's just upsetting and there's really nothing that I can do about any of it, so there's no point reading it.

Stopping myself from scrolling Twitter several times a day and avoiding reading the national/international news this week has really been beneficial for me, I think. I've mostly just been reading the local news and Ars Technica to keep up with what's going on in the parts of the world that may actually impact me. Are any of you on similar regimes? Ideally, I'd be able to inform myself mostly through Gemini, but sometimes it is good to know what's going on in my immediate vicinity.

I've always been a solitary bee, and I've never really felt lonely, but for some reason right now I'm wondering if it would be nice to have some friends again. I changed continents a number of years back and just haven't built up the same kind of friend/support group here that I used to have. I kind of miss it, but on the other hand I like being free from...other people. I don't have any answers or great conclusions to make about this, but it's something that's on my mind for some reason.

I'm thrilled that the zuchinni plants in our garden are finally starting to produce! The resulting squash is so tender and delicious, and goes straight from the plant to my oven in seconds. It even takes less time to cook as it's already been warmed by the sun all day! The potatoes are starting to be ready for harvest as well, I've already taken one bucket of them in and there are 3 more out there waiting in the garden. They're so clean and beautiful compared to what's available at the store, and so easy to grow as well! I definitely recommend potatoes for any beginning gardener. The new visual novel series We Are OFK is a heck of a story and worth checking out! The characters have had some great emotional arcs so far through the first two episodes which have been released, and fall into some unique archetypes such as game designer, Twitch streamer, and eternally-online AI developer. Then they form a band, and the music isn't bad either. I'd definitely say it's worth your time to at least check out the trailer and see if anything clicks for you! I've been playing it on my Steam Deck which is my primary PC now, but it's also on Switch and the other console suspects if that's your thing. A new user has entered the station! I'm interested in bringing some more original content to Geminispace, but I'm still in the stages of seeing what all is out there already to see what would be best to contribute. It's difficult to say what exactly I can add to things, but as I believe is mentioned in some of the starter documents it seems like there's room for a lot more non-tech content since the technical knowledge currently needed to even know Gemini exists is still kind of a barrier for that material to proliferate. Does anyone have any fun ideas? :)
