Probably different strokes, but my selfishness has been precursor to malady often enough that I can't help but see it as a sort of "pride cometh before a fall" grade blindness that gives foolishness a run for its money.
When my selfishness has caused suffering, it's because I was not only selfish but short-sighted and thoughtless. One can act in an altrustic manner for perfectly selfish reasons simply by believing that doing so will eventually redound to one's own benefit.
