Just got told by one of the operators in the Bitreich IRC to "stop spreading Gemini filth" because "Gemini was created so the hipsters can go there" and not make Gopher the next web.

That was unexpected. I'm definitely staying far away from that community.

@haze Yeah, they were talking about the Gemini protocol. I wasn't even spreading Gemini obsessively. People were hating on Gemini (it's lack of spec, and the fact that gopher over SSL exists), so I literally just mentioned that Gopher doesn't have an updated spec, that Gemini's spec, while not "official" according to IETF, does stil exist, and that Gopher isn't as simple as people claim it is when you actually write a server for it (a Gemini server is simpler than a Gopher over TLS server).

Anyways, they said I was spreading "Gemini filth" and that Gemini is where all the "hipsters" go or whatever. Basically denigrating Gemini users. · 5 months ago

@userfxnet Yeah, I shouldn't have expected much, considering some of the things on the site. Anyways, it provided inspiration for my new Initiative! gemini://auragem.letz.dev/devlog/20240305.gmi · 5 months ago

seems ever since that fateful so-called "eternal september" many of these old timey net geezers seem to bring up many times in reference to the availability of internet, usenet, n web services by way of Delphi they remain, as appropriately put, eternally bitter and vengeful over the fact the web took precedence over gopher, DESPITE much of the backlash AGAINST commercializing gopher (although entertaining it in the beginning!) -yet- still pining for some widespread activity as if to replace conventional online services. I don't blame you on your stance, and clearly a place called "bitreich" doesn't sound like a place for any kind of open development of anything lol oof · 5 months ago
