UFC 280 Thoughts

This entire card is looking like one of the most insane ever. The last time I was this excited about an event was UFC 239; that was a night that saw Jorge Masvidal knock out Ben Askren, Jon Jones edge out a narrow victory over Thiago Santos, and Amanda Nunes headkick (IIRC?) Holly Holm for a KO.

It's been a crazy few years, but if this timeline means we can see fights like this, I'm not mad at it.

Khamzat vs Nate Diaz

Is it legalized murder? I'm not sure. There's definitely the possibility that Khamzat tires himself out, takes Nate down, and gets ensnared by his jiu-jitsu.

There's a narrative built on the assumption that Diaz was pressure into this fight but it looks like he actually _wanted_ this matchup. For a 37 year old guy who just needs to fight out his contract before he boxes Jake Paul and rides into the sunset, that seems like a strange request.

Prediction: it's probably going to be an ass-whooping of sad proportions. I foresee an easy KO/TKO/doctor's stoppage for Chimaev.

Petr Yan vs Sean O'Malley

The fact that the guy ranked thirteenth is about to take on the dude who some people could reasonably argue should still be champ.. is pretty surprising. Even though Suga's talent is undeniable, so too is the fact that he clearly got this fight because of his starpower. His only legit victory over a ranked fighter was his fairly impressive performance over Paiva and - since then - he beat up Kris Moutinho for three rounds, and then had a no contest fight against Pedro.

Prediction: yan wins this one by stoppage in the second.

Oliveira vs Makhachev

I've watched both these guys fight, but honestly don't feel confident making a call either way. It seems like Do Bronx has his will questioned before every fight, despite the fact that he constantly succeeds expectations.

I feel like Islam has the most pressure on him, here. He's been calling for the title for a long time, but I'd fancy his chances much better against any other top 5 lightweight. His top pressure is insane, and he's obviously got better standup than Khabib; but Charles has surprising power, too.

Prediction: oliveira by submission in round three (yes, seriously. why not?)

Sterling vs Dillashaw

Aljo's comeback from being the most-hated dude in the UFC, to getting neck surgery, to decisively beating Petr in their rematch has been inspiring.

I still feel that TJ lost that match with Sandhagen, and he didn't have many (if any?) memorable moments. Obviously he controlled the fight for a fairly long time, but I just feel that he did very little _with_ that control.

Prediction: Aljo by sub. Third round.
