I spent some time trying out Fedora SilverBlue today. That is a version of Fedora the has an immutable system install. You install apps on top of the system as Flatpaks or containers so you aren't modifying the base system itself.
I had installed it on a Zima Board PC which has a lower powered Celeron with 8GB RAM. I did this last month, so when I fired it up again today there was a system update available. I ran the upgrade via command line and it went well, though the percentage completed kept going up then down again as it kept finding new dependancy packages it needed.
I then installed Vivaldi browser, which took about 45 minutes because there is no Flatpak available and I had to figure out how to create a new container to install it into the old fashioned way with dnf. Then I had to setup the .desktop file correctly to show in KDE and launch properly inside the container. But finally I have success!
I installed GIMP which is a Flatpak, poked around to see what other apps are offered and there seem to be quite a good number. The ones listed in the "Discover" app manager are all Flatpaks I beleive.
So overall it was a very interesting experience. I will keep this around and play with is some more. I wouldn't want to switch over yet, I did experience a few KDE crashes and you can't pin a containerized app to the task manager. But it certainly is usable with a little extra learning and effort.
