Re: "Emoji support in Lagrange"

In: s/Lagrange

To each her or his own, but I think emojis are in bad taste.

I also feel that they violate the spirit of Gemini, add noise, and make text really hard to read...

The original post here took several attempts because I was completely distracted by the monkeyface or maybe a blender icon, figuring out why a blender, then realizing it's not a blender or a monkey but some kind of a really ugly prize chalice... Needless to say I had no clue what the post was about!

If you want people to understand you, please don't use babytalk, all-caps, or emojis! Except maybe in private sexts or something

I wouldn't go so far as to say they violate the spirit of Gemini — they're part of Unicode and they are being used as intended — but they certainly have their downsides. There is no single correct visual presentation for them so conveying meaning accurately is a challenge.

There's always old-school emoticons. ;-)

...which does give me an idea related to the text snippets feature. It would be possible to have it auto-replace certains strings like :-) with the chosen substitution, like 🙂. Setting up a bunch of Emoji replacements would take some time, but it would solve freezr's problem.

Linux input methods do support emoji input, though. If you don’t use or like them, your best bet is probably character map programs (I use one in KDE – KCharSelect, even though it has its own emoji search program). If you only use a limited number of emoji you can also setup Compose sequences. There are also console programs that allow you to search and copy emoji, but I haven’t used any, so can’t really recommend anything here.

Here's another option: https://github.com/tom-james-watson/Emote. I also agree this is not a resposibility of the app. XFCE (or GTK3? I'm not sure) has a native emoji picker in some apps, like the address bar in Thunar: just right click and "Insert emoji". Not sure how to invoke that same pop-up from another app though.

@skyjake, re "I wouldn't go so far as to say they violate the spirit of Gemini"...If bold text was rejected as unnecessary and distracting, I'd say multicolored, profoundly ugly emojis are much more so!

I was even going to suggest using a quiet :) if you really must, and I hope it is not replaced by an uglified Walmart logo.

@skyjake and the other friends, you convinced me... 👍

I'm gonna create and share an emoji page so anyone can use it as described by Skyjake! 😉

@Stack I am not against emoji, these simbols help to have a "conversion" informal... as you would with friends! 🤙

To be fair, emojis work pretty well in menus and flair here, but yeah, I really don't like them mixed into text. Maybe it looks friendly or informal to you, but yuck. I don't know why they make them so aesthetically awful.

About the aesthetic part, one is always free of choosing the font used to display emojis. In my system there seems to be a mix now of multiple fonts being used, as I see some being rendered with a monochromatic font that respects the text color and others with full hi-def colorful drawings.

There is Noto Emoji (not Noto Color Emoji!), which has monochrome emoji. Pretty useful if you prefer them a bit more plain.

Emoji support in Lagrange — @skyjake I knew we already talked about this but Emoji support on Lagrange, on the side panel for instance, it would make Lagrange P E R F E C T ! 🏆 On Android emoji are naturally integrated, and I am pretty sure also on MacOS, on Linux desktop I have to go on Firefox, copy the emoji ,and paste into lagrange… 😩 Perhaps you may add it to your to-do list at the very bottom… 🥺
