Donal O'Regan, 18 Aug
THE FEMALE driver of a car that was poleaxed by a barrier after she did
a food shop has thanked members of the public and emergency services
for their help after the freak occurrence.
A teenager in the passenger seat had a miraculous escape after the
barrier crashed through the windscreen of the car. It is understood he
ducked a split second before the barrier would have hit him.
One person told Limerick Leader: “Honest to God, I don't know how he
escaped. The consequences are not worth thinking about. It’s nothing
short of a miracle. It cut through the car like a hot knife through
butter.”
Photographs from the aftermath of the incident, which happened in
Newcastle West on Sunday last, have been widely shared on WhatsApp.

the Limerick Road, Newcastle West. The driver and the teenager were
treated for shock and taken to University Hospital Limerick. It is
understood the teenage boy had to get stitches and has cuts and bruises
on his face.
The driver, through a family member, wished to thank people on the
scene that helped them out of the car and called emergency services,
gardai, ambulance paramedics who attended, and staff in UHL. They were
discharged on Sunday night. The woman wishes to remain anonymous. It is
not known how the incident occurred.
