A Cork woman living in Abu Dhabi has raised nearly €9,500 in aid of a

local palliative care charity through a marathon challenge.

Aine Barry, 31, a teacher, undertook the challenge of completing 12

half-marathons over the last 12 months.

To mark her 30th birthday in July of last year, following the death of

her beloved grandfather John, and her aunt Cathy, Ms Barry decided to

fundraise for the West Cork Palliative Care charity, who’s nurses

assisted her deceased relatives in the weeks leading up to their death.

Ms Barry covered a total distance of 255km across the 12 events, nine

of which were completed in Abu Dhabi.

Following the completion of her final marathon last month in

Skibbereen, where she was accompanied by family and friends, Ms Barry

raised a total of €9,415 for her selected charity.

Speaking to The Echo, Ms Barry said: “To mark turning 30, I said I’d do

something to give back.

“In February of last year, my mum’s sister passed away from a brain

tumour. Then about two weeks later, my granddad passed away. As it

happened, whatever way the shifts ended up being, the same nurses came

to both houses.

“They were incredible, the way they do their job, I just don’t know how

they do it.

“I decided to do the marathons, and my dad did the first and second

ones with me here in Ireland. Then I did the rest of them in Abu Dhabi

with different people before coming back to finish.

“For the last one, my dad, brothers and cousins said we would do it all

together. It was a really nice way to mark the end of it, because when

I got to the finish line, 50 or 60 of my family members were there to

greet us."

Ms Barry said that she chose the West Cork Palliative Care charity as

the service is one that many people, without realising, may need to use

at some point in their life.

“I was so overwhelmed with the donations, people are so kind,” she

said.

“It was just really nice to see people being so generous for a cause

that is really important.”

At a reception earlier this week, Ms Barry, alongside her family

members, presented the donations cheque to Marymount Hospice, who will

then transfer the funding to West Cork Palliative Care.
