So this is a game that gets millions of views on YouTube, but is very unpopular on HLTB. Only 77 people beat it... I wonder why.
This is another rhythm game, which you may have heard of. It's free, open source, and it's famous for its cartoony art style, its use of nostalgic characters from Newgrounds, and pretty good music. I've listened to metal covers of its soundtrack, which had millions of views, so I was intrigued by this game for a long time. I finally got into the mood to play this after Space Channel 5: Part 2.
Kinda, yeah! All those things I've said in the last paragraph are true. It's free and it has really good music. But I don't see it as anything special either. Maybe because I don't have enough nostalgia for the super early days of Newgrounds... The "story mode" is very basic, it's just one song after another - not nearly as spectacular as Space Channel 5 - plus there are some slightly cringeworthy moments. The difficulty curve is also weird - Weeks 1-6 are easy, then Week 7 just crushes you. ~~I would've given it a 7/10, but...~~
There are native versions available for Windows and Linux, but you might want to play the Newgrounds version, as it has exclusive content (Week 7). Unfortunately, *that web version had some major optimization issues with Firefox *- basically every time I started a song, RAM usage would go up, and *after playing for 15-20 minutes, my 8 GB of RAM were completely full. At that point, the game becomes very slow and unplayable.* Weirdly enough, *this is not a problem in Chromium*, but ugh... I don't want 100% of web browsers to be Google-based, that just seems wrong to me. Some developers just don't seem to care about any browser besides Chrome and its derivatives. The game is only 1-2 hours long, but I still had to switch to Chromium just to complete it... ~~I was pretty frustrated, so my rating is reduced to 6/10 for this game.~~
~~6/10 might be pretty good for a free 2-hour-long game, but still.~~
Also, my rant about RAM usage might be irrelevant, because I'm buying a second 8GB memory stick for my laptop. I need it because I develop (FOSS) Android apps, and Android Studio is a massive memory hog.
So I installed another 8 gigs of RAM into my laptop, for a total of 16. Here are the specs for the base model.
Here are the specs for the base model.
That cost me around 35$, bringing the total cost of my machine to about 350$. Extra RAM by itself probably won't make games any faster, but I can confirm that Android Studio works very smoothly now!
Also, I've been playing more *Friday Night Funkin'*, and I think I was too harsh on it in my last review. I now beat Week 7 on Hard difficulty and that was a ton of fun. Plus, since this game is Free software, with a ton of mods available, I think it deserves at least one extra point for that. I give it an *8/10*.
