Bullet Journaling

2024-01-27

---

I want to write by hand more. I bought a Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pen a few years ago, and I greatly enjoy it, but I've hardly done any writing with it in the last half-year.

At the same time, I'm trying to be more organized and proactive about time management. Last year I tried to kill two birds with one stone by buying a paper planner, my goal being to update the planner daily with the pen.

I also put a separate notebook in my satchel. My plan was to keep track of events and happenings in my planner, then log my thoughts and musings in the notebook. That failed completely; I was already quite inconsistent about updating my planner, whether due to laziness or forgetfulness, and I actually relied on that to keep track of appointments and events. I carried the notebook around for five months, and when I finally pulled it out of my bag last week, it was still completely blank.

Last week I decided to modify my approach. I bought a Leuchtturm 1917 notebook with 120 g paper. I've never used 120 g paper before, and the difference was noticeable right away with a fountain pen: ink didn't bleed through the paper, and it didn't feather but still dried quickly. Pages feel slightly heavy but still crisp, and the pen flows quite smoothly. Just the feeling of the notebook alone has reinvigorated my interest in writing.

The notebook uses dotted paper but is otherwise blank, making it perfect for bullet journaling. I've never made a bullet journal before, mostly because I was never sure how I wanted to structure one. This time I decided to jump in, making a calendar at the front and recording events and thoughts in the subsequent pages.

So far, I find I'm more inclined to write, as the loose format of a bullet journal makes me feel freer to write how I want in the moment. Time will tell if that trend continues.
