Re: A wee bit ambivalent

It feels like such a lost opportunity when someone who is otherwise close to being on the same page around something that so few people grok is so fuddled on climate change, the most important issue of all time.

We could’ve been awesome friends. It’s rare to find people who have some experience transcending this sorts stuff.

oldtimer writes:

And that’s a huge part of the disappointment of individuality, that rising above one’s current estate therein invariably lowers the chances of communication with those who haven’t similarly risen of having any idea what you’re talking/typing about - although of course they see it precisely the opposite way (they: genius | you: idiot) for not being able to “see above their level”, as it were.

Yeah, I get the feeling, although:

1. I used to see it as diving below rather than rising above, since the illusion of individuality is something I see as a human thing more than an animal thing.

2. When I was feeling that way, it was because I was still stuck in the individualistic illusion. It was still the illusory ego “me” that was all like “oh, I’m the only enlightened one at this dinner party”.

There’s a section in “Fight Club” that plays around with that:

Until today, it really pissed me off that I’d become this totally centered Zen Master and nobody had noticed. Still, I’m doing the little FAX thing. I write little HAIKU things and FAX them around to everyone. When I pass people in the hall at work, I get totally ZEN right in everyone’s hostile little FACE.

The joke on the novel’s narrator’s expense is, of course, that if he’s so pissed off all the time maybe he’s not that centered. That was a li’l wakeup call for me.

Back to oldtimer’s post:

So here’s the reality of individuality: you’re either alone in having risen above how the masses model , or jumping over your own knees attempting to appear just as goddamned moronically stupid as the masses, e.g. “OH MY! THE SPORTS TEAM AND/OR BAND AND/OR POLITICAL PARTY AND/OR GENDER I IDENTIFY WITH NOT TO MENTION THE WEATHER!!! ISN’T IT JUST AMAZING?!!! OH MY!”

Yes, the weather is literally the problem.

The first post I ever read of yours was an answer to one of mine saying it’s no use regulating fossil fuel extraction before we’ve legislated around the illusion of individuality. And I don’t have beef around the second part of that statement. I do with the first, the “it’s no use until” part.

Climate change is bigger than you or me.

It’s bigger than hip hop.

Here is the one thing that matters more than who we are and where we’re coming from, the one thing bigger than our egos, and we get stuck in a wisdom contest.

I’ll drop this now. I’ve said my piece. Email me if you have questions or more to add.

We’ve seen this all before:

Any measure to reduce emissions effectively would run against current ways of life or human nature and is thus impossible to implement in a democratic society.
