Last week I finally picked up Tilly Bridges’ book about The Matrix series and… I devoured it.
If you’re not aware, the Wachowski sisters are on record confirming fan speculation that The Matrix films were a Trans metaphor. And yeah, when I re-watched the films over Xmas, a lot jumped out, but I was sure I’d only scratched the surface.
Tilly steps through the films, minute by minute, pointing out Easter eggs, digging into etymology, naming, cinematography tricks, colour use and their own experiences transitioning. The result is fascinating.
Of course, it’s easy to read too much into an artist’s work – I’ve seen people attribute meanings to my own stuff that I really wasn’t thinking about at the time, or you know, just not understanding the joke at all – so Tilly may, in places, be giving more credit than is due, but even so, I don’t think anyone would come away from the book without mad respect for the Wachowski’s, how they processed their own gender identity, and have tried to express (what they could squeak through boardrooms) in their work.
I’ve always loved Resurrections for the mid-digit style Lana put into it. I love it even more now I’ve thought about it with a Trans framing.
